A Detailed Description

When asked by her husband to describe their recent visitor, Umm Maʿbad (raḍiy Allāhu ʿanhā) described our beloved Prophet ﷺ as follows:

“I saw a man who is distinctly handsome with a radiant face. He is well-built, neither blemished by a big belly nor disfigured by an unusually small head.

He is handsome and well-proportioned. His eyes are jet-black, his eyelashes long, and there is hoarseness in his voice. His neck is long, his beard dense, and his eyebrows perfectly close.

When he is silent, he is enveloped in an aura of dignity; and when he speaks, he rises in splendour and glory. He is the most beautiful and most striking of people from far; the most handsome and splendid from close.

He is a gifted orator whose words are neither too few nor too many: it is as though his words are like stringed pearls, sliding off.

He is of medium height, not too tall that you dislike to look at him, nor too short that you disregard him. He is like a branch between two branches: he is the most handsome of the three and the most esteemed of them.

He has companions who honour him: when he speaks, they listen attentively to his words; and when he commands, they hasten to carry out his order. They serve him and gather around him. He neither frowns nor looks down on anyone.” (Ḥākim)

Jābir b. Samurah (raḍiy Allāhu ʿanhu) said:
“I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a night when the moon was full, and he was wearing a red garment. I began to look at him and then look at the moon. By Allah, he was in my eyes more beautiful than the moon!
